Rain, Floods, Floodplain
Here is the latest draft of the Harris County Flood Control District floodplain map. A couple things came to mind as I scanned our neighborhood portion of the map.
1. Our neighborhood is at greater risk than at the time of Harvey.
2. It's not going to get better as more and more former farm and ranchlands north and west of Katy are being replaced with residential and commercial development.
3. As Harris County has lost American citizens and gained immigrants (in one year 40,000 citizens moved out while 30,000 immigrants moved in), the focus of our County Judge and Commissioners Court has changed. For example, $115 million in FEMA flood control money was diverted to NEW low-income housing, while paying only lip service to increasing flood risks to the county. Keep this in mind when you're voting this year.

Apologies for commenting on my own comment, but every time I see a new floodplain map, I think about what it would be like now if the third flood control reservoir from the 1930's plan, had actually been done. There would be less land for development, but I wonder would there also be less flooding of the development we would have?
