Driver Arrested In Street Racing Investigation
An investigation by Constable Ted Heap’s deputies has led to an arrest in a street racing car crash that sent a mother and two children to the hospital in May.
The 48-year-old victim suffered a serious leg injury that required surgery after an accident in the 10500 block of Fry Road. The victim’s two children, ages 10 and 15, were passengers in the car when a speeding Dodge Charger crashed into them as they were leaving a store parking lot. Eyewitnesses told deputies the Charger was racing a black Mercedes at the time of the crash.
Precinct 5 investigators obtained a search warrant allowing them to examine the vehicle’s event data recorder and airbag control module and determined that the Charger was driving nearly 100 miles an hour when the victim’s car pulled out on Fry Rd. and into harm’s way.
With this evidence, Precinct 5 deputies were able to get third degree felony charges against the driver. Jaime Santiago Velez, 25, was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail last week.
“Street racing poses a threat not just to those involved, but to innocent law-abiding drivers too,” said Constable Heap. “The victims in this case are lucky to be alive. I’m proud that our deputies went the extra mile to make sure that justice is served.”
