As part of our ongoing "Getting to Know Your Local Businesses" series, this week we sat down with Jay Chappell, co-founder and co-owner of Truwin.

Tell us a bit about your business: What does your business offer, and how long have you been around?
We pride ourselves on offering better windows and doors to our customers.
We are the transparent window and door company that has a variety of window and door options available, along with the resources to complete almost any project our customers desire.
Our family owned and operated business was launched in 2018; however, we have over 50 years of collective home construction experience in the Houston area.

How did you decide to get involved in this line of work?
Our company was started by a couple of strong customer success, business-minded families who saw a need to provide a better solution for homeowners.
I have a background in customer success and have worked in several industries surrounding customer interaction. The lessons and training I learned over the years prepared me to create a business where our customer’s success is directly related to our success.
Hurricane Harvey had a massive impact on my life and changed everything I thought I knew about who I was and what I wanted to do. My community had just experienced the most devastating natural disaster that left thousands of homes in ruins. At the time, I was a remote employee for an online marketing company in Austin, TX. The day after the water receded, I walked out of my home office and began demoing my neighbor’s homes because it was the right thing to do.
A few days later, my friend, Mike Wimberly, invited me to come work with his construction company, Framestead, as a project manager. I started the next day and ended up rebuilding 6 houses with Framestead and learning the construction business as quickly as I could.
About 6 months into my tenure with Framestead, Mike and his wife, Julie, approached my wife, Sarah, and I about opening a separate business for Windows and Doors because we saw a glaring opportunity to service the Houston and surrounding markets with something transparently different than what was currently available. We took the plunge, invested in the company and started our business together.

Tell us a couple things you are proud of about your business. What are you known for? What separates you from the competition?
We stand behind our core values of transparency, integrity, honor, clarity, and love thy neighbor. We seek out every opportunity to express our values with our prospective customers, our current customers, our vendors, and our internal team. Everything we do is in line with who we are proud to be as a company.

What is your favorite part of running this business?
I love when we can solve a project with a customer that works for them and is exactly what they were dreaming of when they picked up the phone and called us. I love the business of the business including all the ins and outs it takes to be successful and to plan for that success along the way.
It is so much fun creating a brand from scratch and establishing ourselves as a trusted windows and doors partner that our new customers are excited to work with.
I believe in transparent leadership and I like it when customers ask me anything, day or night.

Who is your ideal customer/client? Who do you serve best?
Any homeowner who wants to buy windows, doors or siding and work with a team that is approachable and takes a low pressure, and fact-oriented approach to sales is our ideal customer.
Our best customer is an educated customer. We strive to provide our customers with extensive knowledge relating to whatever new construction or remodeling project they are pursuing, whether it’s doors, windows, siding, or exterior renovations. We feel that if you come to us with a new project and we determine that we are not the right partner to fulfill your needs, then we will do our best to put you in touch with one of our partners that can.

Is there any other information you'd like your potential customers/clients to know about your business?
Our company is a proud founding member of the Kingwood Annual Festival. Along with Framestead and The Bath Program, we were proud to bring this yearly event to Kingwood’s Town Center park in order to celebrate all that this wonderful community has been able to accomplish and how we come together as one when a tragedy happens.
