Stage 1 (Mild) Drought conditions

Loading Image...

The City of Katy is currently experiencing Stage 1 (mild) drought conditions. This is due to extreme heat conditions with no rain forecast in the near future. The City of Katy is asking residents to assist the City with conserving water based on the City’s Drought Contingency Plan. To assist, residents and businesses should:

- Voluntarily reduce watering/irrigation of landscape. Water between 7 pm and 7 am

- Voluntarily reduce water usage in the home/business

- Assess and repair any irrigation leaks, hose leaks, toilet leaks, and any other potential leaks that may cause unexpected water loss

- Reduce draining and refilling of swimming pools

Another source of irrigation water: A/C condensate. Typically our home A/C systems are designed to run that water (essentially distilled water plus a little dust) into the sanitary sewer line. I've read that typical southeast Texas homes generate between 12 an 20 gallons of condensate per day. It would have to be treated to be potable, but with no treatment it's fine for watering a garden or keeping a swimming pool topped off.

For the garden, pH of 7.0 distilled water beats city water at pH of 8.1 for our acid loving flowering plants. For the pool, the same water would save buying muriatic acid to get the pH down into the desirable 7.2 - 7.8 range, as well as buying city water to compensate for evaporation. BTW, while I'm not a big fan of the CDC, that agency does approve and recommend garden and pool use of A/C condensate.

Only drawbacks? City permit and inspections required if you're in the city. And of course a plumber or A/C company to do the work.
