Drought Conditions - Stage 2: How You Can Help

The City of Katy is currently experiencing Stage 2 (moderate) drought conditions. This is due to extreme heat conditions with no rain forecast in the near future. The City of Katy is asking residents to assist the City with conserving water based on the City’s Drought Contingency Plan.

To assist, residents and businesses should:

- Continue exercising voluntary reduction of water usage as previously posted during Stage 1

- Reduce watering and/or irrigation to three (3) times per week

- Refrain from establishing new landscaping until the current drought has passed

- Reduce water use for power washing of buildings, sidewalks, walkways, driveways, parking lots, tennis courts, or other hard surfaces

To assist, the City of Katy is:

- Halting landscape irrigation use at all City facilities

- Halting nonessential government water use including: street cleaning, vehicle washing, operation of ornamental fountains

- Halting the establishment of new landscaping

- Limit hydrant flushing (except for water system repairs)

It would be nice if the city could waive the required permits and inspections for redirecting A/C condensate to our yards and gardens. One plumber declined to even look at my plan because he didn't want to have to deal with the city. Said if I got a permit he would look at it. How does an ordinary homeowner get a plumbing permit? I called and was told it has to comply with national plumbing standards--or something like that.
Meanwhile each of us with central air is flushing 12-20 gallons of water down the drain every day. Water that could keep plants alive. Keep birdbaths full. Or keep swimming pools topped off.

Things would go easier without bureaucratic red tape.

some irrigation systems water the pavement and not the lawn, wasting water.

I have also seen that commercial buildings or business run their sprinklers in the middle of the day. I wonder why they don't comply with these helpful tips.
