Practicing Safety For One And All

A group of Constable Ted Heap's deputies spent yesterday working on high risk traffic stops. These stops involve suspected felons or otherwise dangerous situations requiring the utmost caution for their deputies on the streets. Lt. James Preston and his training staff lead the deputies through multiple scenarios, instructing and reviewing their responses with every repetition.

Most of these participants are rookies, but there are several veteran deputies included in each class too. The mix of experienced and inexperienced is intentional as senior deputies can get a refresher while also serving as veteran mentors for those wearing our badge for the first time.

These scenarios get the adrenaline pumping, and part of their training program is to get deputies to keep control of their adrenaline, keep their thought processes sound in unpredictable situations, and protect both themselves and civilians who may be on hand. #constabletedheap #yourconstable

There can never be enough training and practiced scenarios for all our officers and may they all stay safe and protected.

Notice in the picture, the officers are all carrying and training with "blue guns" which are nonfunctional training replicas of actual firearms. Any time you're training and don't need to actually fire a weapon, this is by far the best way to go. Kudos to the sheriff's department for not skimping on safety to save a couple dollars!

@Gerard : That's true. However it's not a reason to be less vigilant. If you haven't already, take a look at spotcrime.com where you sign up for periodic reporting of reported crimes in your area. I've used this service for over ten years, first where we lived before Katy, in the Briar Forest/Eldridge area, and now for the last four years here in "old Katy." The report I got today lists from 1/10 through 1/15 about 15 incidents within five miles of my home address. They range from "suspicious activity" to "disturbance" to "assault" to "theft" to "shooting" and a couple of arrests. These are all from reports by Katy Police Department only, since Harris County stopped participating with Spotcrime several years ago. If you're in Houston, HPD does participate. In the county, you're on your own.

So true. Being vigilant of surroundings and aware of all that is going on around you is best. Also run errands with a partner (if possible) and try not going by yourself. Police officers do an amazing job but they are not at arms reach everywhere you go. Unfortunately there is too much crime everywhere.
