Throwback Wednesday from the City of Katy

Do you know what the great City of Katy was like back in the early 1900's?

Take a look at the old ‘Stewart & Wright Druggists’ building which used to be located on the corner of Avenue B and Second Street, and has since been moved.

How cool is this!!! Can you imagine traffic now a days if we all had these. Mostly we would have to worry about all the poop!!!! Emoticon

@Fiona : I think they had to worry with mud even more than poop. Descendants of these families still live in the Katy area.

Riding through the mud or the mud kicking back at them from the horses. Reminds me of the reruns of Little House on the Prairie and how it would take them 3 days to get to a location that now would take 2hours. Gives great appreciation for what we do have now!

One thing I've not seen, but there must be some around, is photos of swimming in the rice well ponds. Icy cold water.

@Lillie : I would love to see those. I bet that was their weekly bath in the summer time. (too much trouble to haul and heat water from the water well)

@Fiona : You've watched too many old movies Fiona lol. Those rice wells were around up until about the 1970s when houses started taking over. You couldn't run them without electricity, so most people had wells with pumps, not a bucket, rope and windlass to haul up water. There are still a few of them around, only people don't swim in them any more. There wasn't much to see. They were basically like a pond, only with no fish etc. with a pump house and ummm maybe 24 inch pipe that the water poured from. On the opposite end of the "pond" there was an opening where the water continued on into the ditches and through the fields to flood the fields if they were water leveling or getting the rice started. The water was about 50 degrees.
