The City of Katy wants residents to Beat the Heat

Loading Image...

As temperatures climb throughout this month and the rest of summer, the City of Katy encourages safe habits to prevent heat related illnesses.

Steps to stay cool and healthy:

• If you work outside, make sure you take lots of breaks. (Preferably in shady areas)

• If possible, only work outside during the early morning and late evening.

• Wear light clothing and protect yourself from the sun with a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen – SPF 15 or higher.

• DO NOT leave any persons, especially infants or young children, disabled persons, or animals in a closed, parked vehicle.

• Stay hydrated!! When it’s HOT, water is NOT optional!

Take the time to check on your neighbors, anyone who is sick or those without AC. Together #KatyStrong!

Especially those who do their own grass please remember you want to cut grass in morning or evening or else grass will dry. Also don't cut grass super short. It will start getting yellow.

@Timida21 : I feel compelled to add (as someone who has been cutting grass in the south for 64 years), if you must be out after 9am or before 4pm, be aware of the dangers of UV radiation. A large straw hat, long sleeved shirt, and even lightweight gloves can help protect you from the immediate and long term cumulative effects of UV.

So true about the long sleeves. Sometimes we think if we were a tank top and shorts we stay cooler. But wearing long sleeves prevents the sun beaming down on your skin and protects you from direct sunlight.
