Update from the City of Katy re: ERCOT’s news release

Loading Image...

STATUS UPDATE (06/14/2021 at 6:00 p.m.): CenterPoint Energy is closely monitoring grid conditions and information from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). According to ERCOT, as a result of unplanned power generation outages and customer demand for electricity, the ERCOT system will be close to the amount of power generation available late yesterday afternoon and into the early evening. Grid conditions are expected to continue to be tight today through Friday, June 18.

CenterPoint Energy is asking its customers to conserve electricity this week, particularly between 2:30 to 8 p.m., by following these steps:

• Set your thermostat to 78 degrees or higher – every degree of cooling increases your energy use by six to eight percent.

• Turn off lights and pool pumps and avoid using large appliances like ovens, washing machines and dryers.

• If you don’t need something – please turn it off and unplug it, if possible.

Suggestion for swimming pool owners. If you have a variable speed, or even a 2 speed, filter pump, you can save a LOT of energy and money by running it slower. According to Pentair, a variable speed pump running at 1/2 speed uses only 1/8 as much power--so it doesn't take a genius to figure out that running twice as long at 1/2 speed still consumes only 1/4 as much electricity. And remember, it is the pool chemistry that keeps it sanitary and algae free, not the pump and filter.

I mention these things, because there are many, many new pool owners since the pandemic resulted in people staying home, and pool builders are notoriously bad at providing information to their customers about best practices in pool management.

Another update. This one from Bill King, former candidate for Houston mayor, on his blog. King is less than impressed with the legislature and governor's accomplishments in this area, especially since the state gave this UNELECTED group of grid overseers, ERCOT, an extra $2.5 BILLION to play with, and they still refuse to let the public see their records. Here's a link to King's article:
billkingblog.com/the -texas-power-grid-co ver-up/
and here's one to a petition calling for an INDEPENDENT investigation into the Texas electric grid failure:

Stay cool.

They passed a bunch of bills around this. I saw the list from Sen. Lois Kolkhorst, BUT I believe she said many of them don't take place until Sept 1....after the summer money rolls in IMO....always follow the money Emoticon.

@Lillie : Just watch when your electric plan renews next. I've seen predictions of 3 to 5 cents a kwh increase. My reseller doesn't allow renewals or plan changes while a current plan contract is still in place. Not taking chances on a long term plan at a good rate. We're all going to pay a price for "winterizing" electric generating plants, including the wind farms that we're already subsidizing.

Turn up your air and don't use appliances sounds like the winter mess in reverse...we couldn't use our air or appliances without electricity. Personally, I think a lot of it is just scamming the public.

We hand wash dishes instead of using the dishwasher or do paper plates more in the summer. Also we don't run the washing machine or dryer during peak hours. This also helps keep the house cooler. We rarely use the oven and try to cook out on the grill instead of the stove. There are many ways to conserve.
