Happy Friday Katy! The City of Katy has a new rock monument sign in Downtown Katy! Additionally, a new statue installation of bronze geese happened on Monday, March 22, 2021. Edd Hayes, the Sculptor named the statue The Rising! This is the fourth location to have these big bird statues. The monument sign and geese statues were funded by Keep Katy Beautiful in conjunction with the $180,000 Governor’s Community Achievement Award (GCAA) from Keep Texas Beautiful and the Texas Department of Transportation.

The GCAA program is one of the most prestigious annual environmental awards in Texas. Each year, ten winning communities are awarded $2 million towards landscape improvements for their outstanding overall efforts to keep their communities beautiful and environmentally friendly.

Great that it is in a good location if anybody wants to take pictures. A few years ago I saw someone trying to get pictures at the statue off I-10. Too much traffic there.

I see these geese all around town and admire the artistic efforts put into each one. I can only guess that at some point, Katy was well know for geese?

They are actually called Canadian snow geese. At one time in the 1970 there was more geese than people. About 6 million migrated here. Very interesting!!!

The history is very interesting. It gives you a little appreciation for the Canadian geese and understanding the symbolic meaning for the statues.

@BilWalker : When Katy was just a little rural town of less than 2000 people, mornings would find the fields around town snow white with geese. Millions of them came through, ate some left over rice, and then moved on. The evening air would be filled with their honking as they came in for the night.
