With the help of two wrecker drivers, a Harris County PCT 5 deputy was able to detain and arrest a combative felon recently in west Houston.
According to reports from PCT 5, at approximately 2:45 a.m. last Thursday, a deputy with Constable Ted Heap's office pulled over Pedro Esteban Reyna in the 11600 block of the Katy Freeway for driving with an expired registration tag.
Reyna, 36, exited the vehicle and, after being questioned briefly, managed to escape while being handcuffed.
The suspect then attacked the deputy.
Two wrecker drivers who witnessed the ongoing attack rushed to help and were able to free up the deputy so that Reyna could be successfully handcuffed.
"I am extremely grateful for the action of these wrecker drivers who saw this attack and came to our deputy's aid despite the dangerous situation," said Constable Heap.
Reyna, who has a lengthy criminal history, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, felon in possession of a firearm and assault on a public servant. The deputy suffered some scrapes in the altercation but neither he nor the suspect was seriously injured.
